This figurine shows a royal dancer called muganji. It was made by the Pende tribe, in the area of Bandundu. Dancers used to wear raffia clothes to perform during royal ceremonies. These official events could celebrate the beginning of a war, the enthronisation of a king, the birth of a royal family member or simply for royal visits. The muganji incarnated spirits of the ancestors.
